I created LifeKnot in 2003 as a cross between internet dating and social networking with the focus on finding people that share your interests. Some members use LifeKnot to find a significant other. Others use it to find a friend for hiking, biking, scuba or any of the 1,500 activities listed.

The site has gone through many revisions and could currently use another redesign. I’m listing it to show an example of a custom-built site and also share  some of my experience in running a site of this scale.

LifeKnot was developed using the PHP scripting language, MySQL database, prototype and scriptaculous javascript libraries (among others), custom CSS, and soon PayPal integration.

I’ve created marketing collateral including everything from subway advertisements, vinyl banners and business cards to PDF literature, coffee mugs and stickers. Different print jobs require different files, formats and scale. I use Adobe’s suite of photo and publishing tools for such jobs.

I’ve run Google AdWords and AdSense campaigns for LifeKnot, to both advertise LifeKnot on other sites, atop search engine results and generate revenue by running ads on LifeKnot. I also use Google Analytics, which according to Google is their “enterprise-class web analytics solution that gives you rich insights into your website traffic and marketing effectiveness.”

Some complicated code underlies the site that compares interests (books, bands, movies, tv shows and myriad activities) of all members to show individuals those with whom they share the most in common. So if there isn’t a plug-in solution to a site I build for you I can code it for you from scratch.

Customers looking for businesses start their search online. Your online presence is therefore very important.
